I began my professional life as a software engineer, but motherhood changed the direction of my life in ways I never expected.

During my first pregnancy, my husband and I—like many families—knew very little about pregnancy and birth. We followed the familiar path of choosing a hospital and doctor based on relatives’ suggestions, without truly understanding our options or preferences. Although everything appeared “normal,” my body was telling me a different story. The experience did not feel aligned with me, and I was left feeling that this was not my way of birthing.

When we planned for our second baby, we consciously sought a different experience. This led us to Birth Village, Kochi, where we travelled for the birth with the guidance and support of midwife Priyanka. We attended childbirth classes, felt deeply supported, and experienced a birth that was respectful, informed, and empowering. That experience became a turning point in my life.

Inspired by this transformation, I stepped into the world of birth work.

I completed my Lamaze Childbirth Education certification under Dr. Vijaya Krishnan mam, followed by training as an Infant Massage Instructor, alongside my Lamaze education. As I began supporting families, I noticed that many mothers needed ongoing care beyond birth—especially during feeding and the postpartum period.

Encouraged by one of my clients, I pursued my Lactation Consultant and Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF) certification with the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) at PSG Hospital, where I later worked for a year as a Lactation Consultant. During this time, my work deepened my understanding of the challenges mothers face in the early days and months after birth.

I also trained as a Doula with Doula Collective India, under the mentorship of Divya Deswal. Through this journey, I strengthened my skills in labour support, partner guidance, postpartum care, emotional holding, and evidence-based birth practices. I further trained in Rebozo techniques with Midwife Naolí Vinaver and continued to grow through the learning-rich Doula Collective community.

Alongside, I serve as a volunteer facilitator for Postpartum Listening Circles with Doula Collective India. These circles are offered free of cost and are held weekly, providing a safe, non-judgmental space for postpartum mothers —up to three years postpartum—be heard, and feel supported.

More recently, I completed my Waterbirth International Certification under renowned global birth educator Barbara Harper, expanding my ability to support physiological and waterbirth choices.

For the past three years, I have been supporting mothers and families in and around Coimbatore, walking alongside them through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period with compassion, presence, and informed care.

This work is deeply personal to me. I do it so that no woman feels unheard or unsupported in her motherhood journey—because every mother deserves to be seen, heard, and held.

I’m Nirosha.
